While dress shoes cause most shoe-related health problems, the wrong type of athletic shoes can be troublesome as well. Here are a few tips from the American Orthopedic Foot & Ankle Society for choosing the right athletic shoes. • Try on shoes at the end of the day. Your feet are larger then. • Make sure you can wiggle your toes when you are wearing the shoe. • The shoes should be comfortable as soon as you get them. A break-in period is not necessary. • If the shoe slips at the heel, you don’t have a good fit. Choose another size or style. • If you participate in a particular sport regularly, get shoes designed for that sport. • When trying on sport shoes, be sure to wear the kind of sock you’ll be wearing when you wear the shoes.
